Week 03

THE ELEMENTS OF THE CITY

In continuation from last weeks introduction into the elements within a city, this weeks lecture provided a brief explanation about the major elements that are found within a city; street typologies (residential street, commercial street, avenues), esplanades, promenades, malls and different classifications of squares.

REFLECTION

I suppose without attending this lecture, I would not have looked at a square and have had the knowledge to what "type" of square it is, nor would I have been able to dicern its differences with another square.
It is also interesting to note how plants or other structures are deliberately placed in certain areas of a street or mall to act as "buffers" from buildings and shopfronts. Although I am in my final years or Architecture it is worrying that I still have much to learn...
In todays workshop we completed a Nollimap, an Urban Section and a Street Section. I was rather excited to do the nolli map in the workshop today :D , I feel these elements from this week will be good to include in our group assignment later on.
