Week 04

THE ANALYSIS OF THE CITY

This weeks lecture discussed the different ways to analyse a city, major methods such as:

- Mapping (a representation of something)
- Historical Analysis (maps the evolution, growth and change in the urban environment)
- Mobility Analysis (used to investigate the connections between different parts of the city inorder to understand its structure and usage)
- Functional Analysis (shows both the "kind" and the "type". eg: commercial/bakery)
- Morpho Typological Analysis (shows how a city works, discover desirable locations, best mothod to reach them, etc)
- Structural Analysis

The different types of analysis may be condensed to be shown on one image, depending on the detail involved. During the lecture different urban planning techniques of the French, English and Italian were discussed.

REFLECTION
In this weeks workshop we analysed the Howard Smith Wharves, Brisbane City area by using four mapping techniques: historical analysis, mobility analysis, functuonal analysis and morphology analysis. I feel these mapping techniques will be really useful for our group assignment. This week I noticed we did not recieve our group city choices back from Mirko, so I emailed him to see if there was an issue, and apparently one of our group members who was commissioned with the submission task did not submit our selections to him. Nevertheless, after a brief email discussion Mirko granted us our third preference - Route 66.
Our tutor Chris has given us two options within Route 66: either Amarillo, TX or Pasagenea, CA. They are both incredibility different towns, holding different values, infrastructure and history, I think we are leaning more toward Amarillo, it has a distinct grid-like, simplistic layout.
