WEEK 11

ARCHITECTURE + ARCHITECTRE = URBANISM

Today we had Peter Richards, from the Brisbane based firm Deicke Richards discuss his interpretation of architecture in the city. As he explained, patterns within cities don't always emerge immediately, they are not always obvious until you understand the city.  Places need activies for people to engage with the urban space.

Walkability, Diversity, Proximity, Connectivity, Accesibility, Legibility and Community are important factors to consider when creating a Memorable Place. Further main factors to consider:

1. Quality of Setting/Location
- Geographical features - creating a place by altering its appearance NATURALLY.

2. Identifiable Centre/Edge
- Main street in an area, mall, shopping centre

3. Streets
- Create mobility for cars, bicycles and people

4. Parks and Squares
- Reflect the city's personality, and personality of the comunity
- Host markets, metting places, recreational spaces

5. Architecture and Urban Facilites
- Heritage structures = rich historical diversity.

REFLECTION

I enjoyed this week lecture due to the simplicity and topic guest lecturer Peter Richards covered: creating Memorable places. I believe every building should be memorable, and unique in its own way, whether the uniqueness is subtle or prominent. I enjoy pondering over the question of "what makes a bulding memorable?" I believe it is extremely important as architects and designers that we value the importance of creating buildings with meanings, rather than another mass of timber and bricks plonked on a site.
I find it helpful that Peter also focused on our own Brisbane city, and the elements within it, as this will be of good use for the assignment. For the majority of this week I have been focusing on the assignment due in 2 weeks: as I am doing a 1:500 scale model of a Brisbane multi-residential block, I have been playing with a few programs which would be the most effective way to create a model. I've been thinking about creating a plaster model using the 3d printer, though I am hestitant as I have never used the machine before and I'm not 100% confident in the quality of the finish it produces, judges from previous students work. I really want to show each individual floor as so I may imply use the laser cutter instead....
