This week we had three guest speakers: Elise Robertson, Magdalena Kowalik and Susan Loh. The lecture was divided into three sections and covered the ever-imporant topic of sustainabilty and the importance of designing for the future: the creation of eco-cities. Three maintypes of "eco-cities" were defined: The Garden City, Historic City Centres and Utopian Green Cities. The key to aiding in the positive development of eco-cities, SMART design is crucial.

It is shocking to see that designers have only just started to pick up on the imprtance of eco-friendly design in recent years, where most of the damage has already been done and in some cases, is irreversable. Rather than always focusing on keeping up with bulding "trends" we must remember sometimes the most simplistic designs are the most effective. I am quite interested in the abstract view of a "perfect" and even geometric shaped city. The form of the proposed city intrigues me. However as architects and to achieve the most harmonious otcome, we must design for the environment, the context and the people, not simply based on idealistic views and perfect shapes.

The assignment is due next week! I have been busy making the model of the Soleil Tower for the Brisbane group, and have decided to laser cut all 74 floors using perspex, with the walls being semi-transparent where it is clear to see the the relationship between the building (an apartment block with 360 degree views to the Brisbane River, etc - will be the tallest tower in Brisbane 2011). Photos will be posted soon~
